Rev. Samuel G. Stone was born in 1836 in Ontario Methodist Episcopal
Methodist Episcopal General Conference, held at Napanee, August, 1874 Rev. “S.G.” Stone (as he usually signed) was the Methodist Episcopal encumbent for the Town of Napanee at the time of the Conference and one of its prime movers.
Rev. Samuel G. Stone was born in Cramahe township, Northumberland county on March 25, 1836. His father came to Upper Canada from the United States.
Rev. Stone was stationed in Ottawa when he married Lovina Johnson on New Year’s Day, 1863. At the time of the 1871 census, he was still in Ottawa. The family moved to Napanee in 1872 or 1873. A son, Samuel George Stone, was born in Napanee on 26 December, 1973 and the birth was registered in Napanee the following April. The next child, James Giles, however, was born in Hamilton on 2 July, 1876 and the family continued in Hamilton until at least 1883. Although on the birth registration of each of four children in Hamilton, S.G. gave his occupation as “Minister”, on the 1881 census it is given as “Editor”.
The 1891 census reveals that the family had moved to Meaford, in Grey County. By then, Samuel and Lovina had a large family. Samuel was then sent to Sault Ste Marie in the Algoma District and shows there on the 1901 census.
Rev. Stone died on April 1st, 1905, in Sault Ste Marie, but his death was registered in the District of Parry Sound.…The Lennox and Addington County Museum and Archives Photo Credit: e30052b
